St. Augustine residents portray the royal family in full costume and conduct the ceremony. Each honoree is presented with a medal, a plaque and a sword-to-shoulder "knighting" by the current Royal Family Queen Mariana. The heritage event takes place from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, March 25, 2024 in the West Courtyard of the Cathedral Basilica.
The Royal Family is made up of St. Augustine residents who represent Spain's Royal Family in 1672 — Queen Mariana, King Juan Carlos, and Princess Margarita Maria. This family was in power at the time the Castillo de San Marcos was commissioned. The Royal Family of St. Augustine travels to out-of-town appearances in period dress to represent the city and promote its history and heritage.
